In a comprehensive overview the research project Plattform Aachen examines the eventful founding phase of the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen. Revealing contemporary documents allow us to closely follow the process of development, which went on for years and was often characterized by tension. Which decisions taken by local politicians led to abandoning the original idea of a new building on Monheimsallee, and thus eventually to the complex renovation project for the former umbrella factory of Emil Brauer and Co. in Jülicher Strasse? In 1991 contemporary art, at home for the previous 20 years in the Neue Galerie, found its destination in the historical factory building. Under the title of a new kind of Museum, the Ludwig Forum, as a center for world art, broke new ground with its innovative concept and multi-disciplinary program, instantly becoming a location for artistic encounters and action, for discussion, and for active engagement with music, dance, poetry, and film. Historical photos, newspaper articles, original documents, and television reports from the Forum’s archives illustrate the turbulent planning phase through to the spectacular opening of the Ludwig Forum 25 years ago.

Entdecken Sie die Vielfalt Aachens - und genießen Sie die Stadt des Wassers und der Pferde, bekannt durch Karl den Großen und berühmt für ihre Printen. Die 2000 Jahre alte Kaiserstadt präsentiert sich als weltoffene Großstadt mit historischem Flair.

Stolz blicken die Aachener auf ihre Geschichte als römische Bäderstadt und Kaiserresidenz Karls des Großen zurück. Der Dom, 1978 zum ersten UNESCO Weltkulturerbe in Deutschland ernannt, und das Rathaus bilden den Mittelpunkt der Stadt. In den Gassen der Altstadt erzählen viele historische Gebäude von der lebhaften Geschichte der Stadt, und doch ist die Zeit nicht stehen geblieben.

An der „Eliteuni“ RWTH Aachen und den anderen Hochschulen sind rund 40.000 Studenten eingeschrieben. Das junge Leben pulsiert vor allem im Pontviertel, dem beliebten Ausgehviertel mit seinen zahlreichen Cafés, Kneipen und Restaurants. Doch auch in den Gassen und auf den Plätzen der Altstadt ist immer viel los. Rund um Dom und Rathaus laden zahlreiche Einzelhändler ebenso wie Filialen namhafter Häuser zum Bummeln ein.

Quelle allen Ruhms ist das Wasser: Die Heilkraft der heißen Thermalquellen war ausschlaggebend dafür, dass Kaiser Karl Aachen zu seiner Lieblingsresidenz machte. Die Badetradition wird heute durch die Carolus Thermen Bad Aachen weitergeführt.

Wer sich lieber in der Natur entspannt, hat dafür zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, etwa im nahe gelegenen Nationalpark Eifel. Zudem locken mehrere Theater und Museen mit einem vielschichtigen Angebot.
