Framed by the hundred-year anniversary of the October Revolution and the\u00a0presidential election in Russia in March 2018, the Ludwig Forum f\u00fcr\u00a0Internationale Kunst looks at the situations and aesthetic forms of the\u00a0political in contemporary art. In stark contrast to the perestroika\u00a0years and the decade that followed, the 1990s, the pressure placed on\u00a0a politically\u00a0engaged art has increased continually in recent years. In response to\u00a0the repressive practices of the “guided democracy,” many artists of the\u00a0post-perestroika generation \u2013 a lot of them are born in the 1980s\u00a0\u2013 have developed strategies of artistic\u00a0resistance ranging from subtle expressions of discontent to open\u00a0protest. Their sphere of activity is the public space and the Internet.\u00a0The exhibition will explore a range of artistic positions from critical\u00a0social analysis to political actions \u2013 both of which have an obvious\u00a0affinity with the political activism of opposition movements \u2013 to\u00a0sociopolitical utopias.<\/p>\n
While the exhibition has been organized chronologically, the works of art are grouped according to\u00a0specific characteristics that aim to contextualize artistic practices and\u00a0activities. Categories include, for example, the legacy of communism in Russia,\u00a0anarchism and punk culture, feminism, and stereotypes, as well as the\u00a0support of migrants and minorities in Russia. At the same time,\u00a0this classification poses\u00a0the question of where the boundaries lie between art and activism\u00a0and their strategies and movements. Archival material that documents the\u00a0history of the censored exhibitions “Beware, Religion!” (2003) and “Forbidden Art” (2007) will accompany the artistic and activist positions\u00a0of the exhibition, as well as a timeline that will highlight important\u00a0political and artist-activist events from 2000 to the present.<\/p>\n
