Flower Blast, Annette Wehrmann’s eponymous work, invokes the spirit of new beginnings in the early 1970s. A growing women’s movement likewise inspired the art world of the time. Female artists announced an end to modesty and claimed the same respect for themselves in all areas of art that men had always had. They created large-scale sculptures, staged their naked bodies in videos and performances, and were provocative in their use of political actions in public spaces. At the same time, feminist art theorists paved the way for a new appreciation of women’s artistic achievements.<\/p>\n
1970 was also the year that the Neue Galerie \u2013 Sammlung Ludwig was founded. This predecessor of the Ludwig Forum f\u00fcr Internationale Kunst, one of the world’s most important collections of contemporary art \u2013 that of the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig \u2013 was provided with a permanent location in Aachen. We are taking the anniversary of the institution as an opportunity to subject our collections to reassessment and, for the first time, to focus exclusively on female artists in a display of around one hundred works.<\/p>\n
