With “Training the Archive” (2020-2023), the Ludwig Forum Aachen dedicated itself to the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). Together with the HMKV Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund and RWTH Aachen University, the research project investigated whether algorithms can create new approaches to one’s own collection and support the practice of curators. In addition to a specially developed software prototype, a publication of the same name was published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König. With its diverse content, the publication combines interviews with experts, material on the research process and texts critical of AI. Dominik Bönisch – former project manager of “Training the Archive” – will present the recently released publication, and talk to Markus Lingemann (Off Office, designer) and Isaak Lim (RWTH, Visual Computing Institute) about the process of developing the publication and the project.
