European Reception of 20th century Japanese Avant-garde

In her lecture European Reception of 20th century Japanese Avant-garde curator Aomi Okabe will look back at the exhibition Japon des Avant-Gardes: 1910–1970 (Avant-garde Japan: 1910–1970), which was realized between 1986–1987 at Centre Pompidou in Paris. She was one of the only young Japanese curators commissioned by the Pompidou Center for the preparation of this show.

The event is taking place in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University. The lecture will be held in English. Free admission.

Aomi Okabe is an art critic, curator and artistic director. After returning to Japan in 1995, she was appointed professor for contemporary Art at the Musashino Art University (Tokyo), for 12 years, and visiting researcher at New York University. She was Chief Curator at the Mercian Karuizawa Museum for five years and curated several exhibitions including Georges Rousse in Miyagi (2013) and Georges Rousse, Hanshin Art Project (1995). Between 2014–2020, Aomi Okabe was artistic director of the Maison de la Culture du Japon in Paris. Her publications include Art, Women and Images (2003) and The Story of the Centre Georges Pompidou (1997). Aomi Okabe was also chief-editor of the review Transphere.

Murielle Hladik is an architect, PhD in Japanese Aesthetics and curator. She published Traces and Fragments in the Japanese Aesthetics (Mardaga, 2008) and is currently teaching aesthetics and Japanese architecture and gardens at RWTH Aachen University. She curated several exhibitions e.g. On the Art of Building a Teahouse — Excursions in Japanese Aesthetics (in collaboration with Axel Sowa, Neues Museum, Nuremberg, 2017–2018) and Traces of Disappearance (together with Eva Kraus, Espace Louis Vuitton,Tokyo, 2014).
