Struck by an Image

Photographs from the Collection

What does it mean to be “struck” by an image? A physical encounter, an emotional connection? Perhaps even a profound realisation or intrusion, usually sudden and unexpected. And do photographs affect us differently than other works of art?

Using these questions as a starting point, this exhibition in the Works on Paper Gallery undertakes a small exercise in looking at photographs. The selection of works from the Ludwig Forum’s collection traces thematic lines between documentation and artistic intent, thereby also indulging in the pleasure of rediscovering works whose light sensitivity has resulted in them lying dormant in storage, and whose unique power reveals itself only upon close, intimate contemplation.

With works by Herbert Abert, Wolfgang von Contzen, Peter Helm, Heiner Ix, Irmel Kamp, Hans-Martin Küsters, Hans Laven, Daniel Poensgen, Wilhelm Schürmann

Curated by Dr. Nora Riediger
