Lecture by Gabi Ngcobo (artist, educator and Curatorial Director Javett-UP) on the occasion of the finissage of the exhibition “Belkis Ayón. Ya Estamos Aquí”.
The internationally renowned artist and curator, Gabi Ngcobo, will give a lecture on the closing weekend of the exhibition Belkis Ayón. Ya Estamos Aquí. Ngcobo curated the 10th Berlin Biennale We Don’t Need Another Hero in 2018, which included works by Belkis Ayón, particularly the Consecration trilogy from 1991 and the series of smaller round prints from 1998, all currently on view at the Ludwig Forum Aachen. Ngcobo’s curatorial work has focused on postcolonialism and the reappraisal of History and Memory within collaborative and educational projects worldwide.
Gabi Ngcobo is an artist, educator, and Curatorial Director of the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP). Since the early 2000s Ngcobo has been engaged in collaborative artistic, curatorial, and educational projects in South Africa and on an international scope. In 2018 Ngcobo curatorially directed the 10th Berlin Biennale titled We don’t need another hero and was one of the co-curators of the 32nd Sao Paulo Biennale titled Incerteza Viva (2016). She is a founding member of the Johannesburg based collaborative platforms NGO – Nothing Gets Organised (2016-) and the Center for Historical Reenactments (2010–14). Ngcobo’s writings have been published in various publications including Shooting Down Babylon: The Tracey Rose Retrospective at Zeitz MoCCA, Cape Town (2022), Uneven Bodies, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Aotearoa New Zealand (2021), The Stronger We Become, catalogue of the South African Pavilion, Venice Biennale (2019), We Are Many: Art, the Political and Multiple Truths, and Texte zur Kunst (2017).
